Who the General suits
Buy a General if you want one machine that does two jobs. It hauls feed, firewood and coolers like a Ranger, then runs trails harder than any utility rig thanks to RZR-derived suspension. Riders around Louisville, Jeffersonville and Southern Indiana use them on farms during the week and at trail parks on the weekend.
If you only want speed and travel, look at a pure sport machine instead — see our side-by-sides and ATVs page for the full range.
General 1000 vs General XP 1000
- General 1000 — the standard model. 100 hp ProStar twin, 600 lb dump bed, 1,500 lb towing. Narrower stance, easier on tight trails and trailers.
- General XP 1000 — wider track, longer-travel suspension, bigger tires, usually arched A-arms and beefier axles. Better in rough terrain, rougher on fuel and width limits.
- Seating — both come in two-seat and four-seat versions. The 4 models stretch the wheelbase, which smooths the ride but widens your turning circle.
- Trims — Premium, Deluxe and Ultimate packages add things like Ride Command, winches, roofs and upgraded shocks. On a used unit, factory options matter less than how the machine was treated.
What to check on a used General
- Belt and clutches — ask when the belt was last replaced and listen for clutch noise on takeoff.
- Front diff and axle boots — torn CV boots are common on trail machines and cheap to catch early.
- Bed hinges, tailgate and frame near the bed mounts — work use shows here first.
- Suspension bushings and ball joints — grab each wheel and check for play.
- Service history on the air filter and oil, especially on dusty-use machines.
