Harley merged the Dyna and Softail lines in 2018 onto one chassis with the Milwaukee-Eight engine. Here is the short version:
Older Softails — Evo and Twin Cam bikes like the Slim, Deluxe and pre-2018 models — ride softer and cost less. They are a solid way into a Harley if the budget is tight.
On 2018-and-newer Milwaukee-Eight bikes, look for service records on the 1,000-mile and 10,000-mile intervals, check the rear mono-shock preload adjuster works, and listen for top-end noise on a cold start. On Twin Cam bikes, ask about cam chain tensioner history. On any used Harley, inspect the primary for leaks, check tire date codes, and confirm the title matches the VIN. We do all of that before a bike is listed, and we will walk you through what we found.
